Pelvic Pain Treatment in St. Petersburg, FL

Pelvic pain is one of the most underdiagnosed and undertreated conditions in women's health — and one of the most life-altering. If you've been told 'everything looks normal' but you're still in pain, or if you've been living with chronic pelvic discomfort for years without answers, you are not imagining it. At The HOPE Doctors, we specialize in chronic and complex pelvic pain, and we will take you seriously.

What Is It?

Pelvic pain can stem from the pelvic floor muscles, connective tissue, nerves, joints, or a combination of all of these. It may present as constant or intermittent pain in the pelvis, vagina, rectum, hips, or low back. Common diagnoses associated with pelvic pain include vaginismus, vulvodynia, interstitial cystitis, endometriosis, pudendal neuralgia, levator ani syndrome, and pelvic congestion syndrome. Pelvic floor PT addresses the musculoskeletal component of these conditions — which is often a significant driver of symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of Pelvic Pain

•        Chronic pain in the pelvis, vagina, vulva, rectum, or tailbone

•        Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or certain activities

•        Pain during or after intercourse

•        Painful periods or pelvic pain around ovulation

•        Urinary urgency, frequency, or pain with urination

•        Pain with bowel movements or rectal pressure

•        Hip, low back, or sacral pain linked to pelvic floor tension

•        Muscle spasm or 'clenching' in the pelvic floor

How We Can Help:

Pelvic pain almost always involves pelvic floor muscle hypertonicity — muscles that are too tight, guarded, or in a constant state of protective tension. Our approach focuses on releasing that tension through internal and external manual therapy, nervous system regulation, breathing work, movement retraining, and desensitization of painful tissues. We also collaborate with your OB-GYN, urogynecologist, or other providers as needed — we have an extensive network in the Tampa Bay area.

What to Expect at your first session:

•        A 90-minute first session with a thorough pain history and assessment

•        Internal pelvic floor assessment to map tension, trigger points, and tissue quality

•        Manual therapy — internal and external — to release muscle tension

•        Nervous system and breathing regulation techniques

•        Home program for pain management between sessions

•        Coordination with your other providers when appropriate

Frequently Asked Questions:

My doctor said everything looks normal. Can PT still help?

Yes. Pelvic floor muscle dysfunction often doesn't show up on imaging or during a standard gynecological exam. A pelvic floor PT is specifically trained to assess what your other providers may not be evaluating.

I'm scared about an internal exam. Do I have to have one?

We will never perform any assessment without your full consent and comfort. We move at your pace, always. An internal exam is often the most informative tool we have, but we can make meaningful progress even if you're not ready for that right away.

How long does it take to see improvement with pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain often takes longer to treat than incontinence or prolapse because of the nervous system component. Most clients see meaningful improvement within 6–10 sessions, though complex cases may take longer.
